TRUE STORY: That ring belonged to DeForest Kelley’s mother. I think her brother got it while fighting in France in WWI. Anyway when she died, it was the only thing of hers that De wanted. When he auditioned for Trek, Gene Roddenberry said he couldn’t wear the ring because it wasn’t spacey. De told him if he couldn’t wear the ring, he wouldn’t do the show. Roddenberry caved (who wouldn’t?) and McCoy has that ring in every episode.

If that’s not enough, in the reboot, Karl Urban wears his Starfleet Academy ring on his left pinky as a tribute to Mr. Kelley. (I couldn’t find a picture on the fly but I know you can see it in the scene where he’s talking his way into getting Jim on the shuttle.)
